Begin Legacy Tour Hits London

September 2019

London, UK

The Begin Legacy Tour's principle mission is to introduce Menachem Begin's principles and leadership to a wider audience... and this time we crossed the Atlantic for a week of activities. Forty years after the signing of the Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt, there was no better time to recognize Menachem Begin’s legacy of security, democracy, liberty and inclusivity. Begin, the man, was a brilliant, tough, humble and proud Jew who never compromised when the dignity and survival of Israel and the Jewish people were at stake. Begin, the leader, transformed Israel.

The events focused on Menachem Begin’s leadership values, presenting a better understanding of Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin’s precedent for peace and the importance of their dialogue and friendship, and a documentary in the works envisioned to tell the story of the founding of Israel through the lens of a complex and passionate man whose ceaseless dedication to Israel and the Jewish people were the touchstones of his political and personal life.

Events were held at South Hampstead United Synagogue, Mill House Synagogue, and the House of Lords. Herzl Makov (CEO of the Begin Center in Jerusalem) and Ed Husain (author of The House of Islam, and co-founder of Quilliam, a London-based think tank focused on counter-extremism) spoke at the programs. The flagship event at the House of Lords was co-hosted with StandWithUs and Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI). In addition to Makov and Husain, the speakers at the Parliament event included Lord Polak CBE (CFI Honorary President) and H.E. Mark Regev (Israel’s Ambassador to the UK). They were joined by Rob Schwartz (founder of Hidden Light) and documentary Producer Bruce Gould (HLI Board Member and incoming Jewish National Fund (JNF) President). Special thanks to Jonathan Feldman, London-based Hidden Light Board Member, for organizing such a successful week of events in London!

Senator Joseph Lieberman and Rabbi Meir Soloveichik spoke about Menachem Begin's legacy and the impact his childhood had on his future leadership.

Rabbi Meir Soloveichik, board member of Hidden Light Institute, and former Senator Joseph Lieberman, ambassador of the Menachem Begin documentary film project, along with Herzl Makov, CEO of the Menachem Begin Center in Jerusalem, captivated a crowd of more than 600 people at the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue in New York City during a memorable evening in May. The program commemorated the 40th anniversary of the signing of the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt by recognizing Menachem Begin’s legacy of security, democracy, liberty and inclusivity.

Both Senator Lieberman and Rabbi Soloveichik have expressed their admiration for Menachem Begin and his contributions to the people and the State of Israel. As Lieberman said, "The founding fathers of modern day Israel seem human to us, and we don’t appreciate them enough. In my opinion, in the sweep of Jewish history, when we think about the miracle of the creation of Israel after the horrors of the Holocaust, their role in our time of providing for us this extraordinary miracle — the State of Israel — is comparable to some of the leading figures in Torah and Tanach. And I can’t think of a better way in the years ahead than for there to be a first-rate documentary, which can be shown on college campuses, about a principled and courageous Zionist named Menachem Begin."

And anyone who has heard Rabbi Soloveichik speak knows that he often peppers his speeches with Menachem Begin anecdotes and refers to Menachem Begin as his "hero." That evening, Soloveichik described him as: “Menachem Ben Zev v’Chasia Begin, who loved his fellow Jews, who did not fear the gentiles, and who always, always bore the yoke of his childhood with him and became, thereby, a leader in Israel the likes of which we may not see again.
